College to host summer kick-off
The Student Advisory Council of Southwest Colorado Community College will host a summer kick-off party from 1 to 4 p.m. today in the parking lot of The Commons Building, 701 Camino del Rio.
Spoken Wheel (folk/mountain music) and Uncovered (rock/alternative) will perform, and activities include pie-throwing, a cupcake walk and face painting. The event is free and open to the public.

Salt Fire tickets go on sale Monday
Tickets for “The Elixir,” the upcoming performance of the Salt Fire Circus and Bare Bones Burlesque, will go on sale Monday at the Durango Arts Center, Southwest Sound and online at www.durangoarts.org.
Performances will be held May 19-21 and May 26-28 at the DAC. There will be two shows per night May 21 and May 28. Tickets cost $20 in advance and $25 at the door.
“The Elixir” includes all original material, including music from the Salt Fire Circus band and performances by Salt Fire Circus and Bare Bones Burlesque dancers, aerialists, jugglers, elephants, monkeys, snake-charmers and more.
Salt Fire Circus and Bare Bones Burlesque is a grass-roots Durango-based performance troupe combining the elements of olde-time circus and classic burlesque.

Museum to mark start of Civil War
The Animas Museum will host a special event from 10:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. Saturday to commemorate the start of the Civil War.
The festivities will include a program by the local Victorian Aid Society in period attire titled “Old Wounds & a New Community: Impacts of the Civil War on Southwest Colorado,” which will examine some of the Civil War veterans who founded our communities.
After the program, attendees may sample cakes created from period recipes and learn how food was prepared for the troops. Children can write a “secret spy message” in invisible ink with a quill pen.

Showcase of the Arts seeking artists
Durango Showcase of the Arts is looking for culinary artists, poets, storytellers, fine artists, performing artists and crafters to develop events that add depth to the Showcase, which will be held Sept. 9 to 25. The next organizational meeting will be held at 5:30 p.m. Wednesday at the Rochester Hotel, 721 East Second Ave.

Durango Public Library to hold book sale
The Durango Public Library will hold a book sale from 9:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Saturday at the library, 1900 East Third Ave.
Saturday’s event is open to the public; there will be a sale from 6 to 9 p.m. today open to Friends of the Library members only.
Books will be sold for $1.50 per pound and audio-visual materials will be priced as marked.

Mancos chorus sets concert dates
The Mancos Valley Chorus invites the public to attend its Spring Concert, “Heart and Soul.” The program will feature Gershwin swing and a variety of love songs from folk rock to inspirational.
Show times are 3:30 p.m. Sunday at Mancos Methodist Church; 7 p.m. Tuesday at First United Methodist Church in Cortez; 7 p.m. Wednesday at Christ the King Lutheran Church in Durango; and 7 p.m. May 6 and 3:30 p.m. May 7 at Mancos Methodist Church. A reception will be held after each concert.
All concerts are free and open to the public, but donations are accepted.
