9-R school board to meet Tuesday

The Durango School District 9-R School Board will meet at 5 p.m. Tuesday in the board room of the administration building, 201 E. 12th St.

All are welcome. A copy of the proposed agenda can be found at www.board docs.com/co/dsd/Board.nsf/Public by 5 p.m. on the Friday before the meeting.

9-R summer academy accepts registrations

The 2011 9-R Summer Academy is registering students for the summer.

The only requirement is that the student is highly motivated and is in second through sixth grades. There will be 80 classes offered, and registration will be done online. To view the catalog and registration pages, visit http://duran goschools.org.

Instruction is delivered at a fast pace and in depth to meet the diversified needs of these students. The number of classes is limited by room availability at Miller Middle School, and the minimum class size is six students.

9-R transportation seeks volunteers

The Durango School District 9-R Transportation Department is seeking volunteers for a committee to investigate alternative funding possibilities.

The committee will consist of 10 to 12 parents, district employees and community members. The committee will meet four times between now and February 2012.

DHS art department to host art show

The Durango High School Art Department will host the Spring Trimester Art Show on Friday and Saturday in downtown Durango at 840 Main Ave.

The show’s opening reception will be from 5 to 9 p.m. Friday and will feature live music by the student group “Frequency.” A bake sale to raise money for the DHS chapter of the National Arts Honor Society will also be held.

The show also will be open for viewing from noon to 6 p.m. Saturday.

Escalante club seeks instruments

Escalante Middle School is forming a free after-school string club for kids.

The club needs string instruments for teenage players. The club needs violins, acoustic steel string guitars, banjos, bass (stand-up or electronic), dobros and mandolins. The group also is accepting monetary donations.

Park Elementary to hold field day

Park Elementary School will hold Field Day on Thursday.

There will golf ball balance, sack races, obstacle courses, balloonathon, Horton Hatches the Egg, water relays and more.

Preschoolers to second-graders will participate in morning activities, and the third-, fourth- and fifth-graders will participate in the afternoon.

Continuing education offered at Fort Lewis

The Fort Lewis College Continuing Education Program will hold these classes:

b “Basics of eBay Selling” with eBay-trained Education Specialist Olen Batchelor will be held from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. May 21. This course will include eBay University training materials and will cover selling basics and beyond, including research, using PayPal, improving listing text and images, security and post-sale activities such as billing and shipping. The cost is $70.

b “Introduction to Mushroom Identification” with Dean Mullen will be held from Aug. 17 to 31. This consists of three Wednesday evening classroom sessions at FLC and two Saturday field trips. The cost is $154 for five classes.

AHS accepting online enrollment

Animas High School continues to accept online enrollment and student registrations for next year’s ninth- and 10th-grade classes.

Students interested in learning more about AHS are encouraged to participate in its Student Shadow program taking place on Fridays throughout the remainder of the school year.

AHS Robotics Team to give presentation

The Animas High School Robotics Team traveled to the First Tech Challenge Championships on March 5 in Denver and was awarded the first-place trophy.

The Durango Discovery Museum has invited the team to present and demonstrate its winning robot from 2 to 3 p.m. Thursday in the Powerhouse Plaza.

In case of bad weather, the event will move inside to the Powerhouse Theater. All ages are invited, and the event is free.

Academy graduation to be held Friday

The Southwest Regional Law Enforcement Academy in Durango, a program of Southwest Colorado Community College, will hold its commencement ceremony at 6 p.m. Friday at the Durango Public Library, 1900 East Third Ave.

The graduation commencement address will be given by Chief Arnold Trujillo of the Fort Lewis College Police Department. The public is invited.

A new Law Enforcement Academy will begin in August. Applications for the program are now being accepted.
