Sheriff’s office looks into shooting

Authorities are investigating a shooting that seriously injured a La Plata County man.

The incident occurred about 11 p.m. Saturday at a home on County Road 521 north of Ignacio.

Investigators responded to find Dennis Snodgrass, 51, suffering from a single-gunshot wound to the chest, according to a news release issued Tuesday by the La Plata County Sheriff’s Office.

Snodgrass was taken to Mercy Regional Medical Center i and later taken to St. Anthony’s Central Hospital in Denver.

Snodgrass was apparently staying at the home even though a restraining order prohibited him from having contact with a woman who lived there, the release said.

Snodgrass is suspected of assaulting the woman. A teenage family member obtained a handgun in the home and repeatedly told Snodgrass to leave, the release says. Snodgrass threatened and advanced on the teenager, the release says.

The juvenile then fired the handgun multiple times at Snodgrass striking him once in the chest.

Snodgrass has a history of arrests, including domestic-violence-related crimes, the release says.

No arrests had been made as of Tuesday.

Anyone with information is asked to call Investigator Jim Hendricks at 382-7018.
