Centauri rallies in fourth quarter

Bayfield boys fall 57-45

Centauri turned the tables on the Wolverines in the fourth quarter Friday night.

The host Falcons outscored Bayfield 22-5 in the final period, giving the Centauri boys basketball team a come from behind 57-45 victory in an Intermountain League game.

Bayfield had taken a 40-35 lead into the fourth quarter when senior Cody Rose and freshman Preston Hardy trigger a run for the Wolverines.

Rose, who finished with a game-high 13 points, scored seven points late in the third quarter.

Hardy added three of his nine points in the same surge.

But Centauri started the final quarter with a 13-3 run to take the lead for good at 45-43.

“We struggled from the free throw line again,” Bayfield head coach Bill Hesford said after the Wolverines hit only 11 of 20 from the foul line.

“And not having Derek (Hillyer) hurt us. He was in foul trouble all night,” Hesford said of the 6-9 senior center.

Chris Jarvies led Centauri with 10 points. KC Jarvies added nine points. Travis Thomas scored eight for the Centauri Boys (11-4 overall, 3-2 in the IML).

Trey Lange added 10 points for Bayfield.

Hillyer finished with five points before fouling out with with 2:01 to play.

Joe Webb and Tyler Kerr also fouled out for the Bayfield boys (7-8, 2-4 in the IML).

“We got great minutes off the bench from Preston Harvey ... great minutes from him. We had him with nine boards,” Hesford said.

Bayfield led 24-21 at halftime, helped by two free throws from Zach Stone and a pair of baskets by Hardy.

The Bayfield boys beat Centauri in Bayfield 61-57 on Jan. 20.

“No excuses,” Hesford said. “We played well for three quarters.”

The Wolverines will host nonconference foe Dolores on Tuesday night before hosting Alamosa in another IML game on Feb. 10.
