Snowshoe races to be held Saturday

The second annual Winter Warrior Snowshoe Race will take place Saturday at the Purgatory Nordic Center with 10K and 5K options plus a Kids Snowdash.

Registration will begin at 9 a.m. on race day. Races will start at 10 a.m.The cost is $15 with proceeds benefiting the Durango Youth Nordic Club.

Medals will be presented to the top three finishers for men and women in Open (14-44 years old) and Masters (45-plus) divisions. There will be other giveaway prizes, and ribbons will be presented for the kids race (no showshoes necessary).

Some rental snowshoes will be available at the Nordic Center, and those who need rentals are advised to arrive early or rent them from other local ski and outdoor shops.

Silverton Snowscape announces events

These events will take place at the Mardi Gras Snowscape in Silverton:

A snowmobile parade will take place at 6 p.m. Friday at Cow Palace at Kendall Mountain Recreation Area, 1 Kendall Place.

A bonfire will take place at 6:15 p.m. Friday at Kendall Mountain.

Poker tournament will take place at 7 p.m. Friday at Kendall Mountain Cafe.

Silverton’s Got Talent will take place at 7:30 p.m. Friday at Silverton Town Hall.

Live music will take place at 9 p.m. Friday at the Silverton Brewery.

Music on the deck of Kendall Mountain with Old River Road will take place all day Saturday.

Ball Drop will take place at 11 a.m. Saturday at Kendall Mountain.

Shovel race will take place at noon Saturday at Kendall Mountain.

Box car race will take place at 1 p.m. Saturday at Kendall Mountain.

Snow golf will take place at 1 p.m. Saturday at the Durango & Silverton Narrow Gauge Railroad Depot.

Croquet tournament will take place at 2 p.m. Saturday at Kendall Mountain.

Ice sculpture judging will take place at 3 p.m. Saturday at Kendall Mountain.

Live music at Grumpy’s will take place at 9 p.m. Saturday at the Grand Imperial and American Legion.

A pancake breakfast will take place from 7 to 10 a.m. Feb. 12 at the American Legion.

Horseshoes will take place at 11 a.m. Feb. 12 at Kendall Mountain.

Cross country races, snowshoe race and bocce tournament will take place from noon to 3 p.m. Feb. 12 at Kendall Mountain.

Server Rush will take place at 3 p.m. Feb. 12 at Kendall Mountain.

Compassionate Friends to meet Monday

The Durango chapter of The Compassionate Friends will meet at 7 p.m. Monday at the Rocky Mountain Retreat/Turtle Lake Refuge, 848 East Third Ave.

This is a support group for parents who have lost a child of any age. Hope, understanding and listening are there for those who grieve, no matter where they are in their journey through grief. Grandparents and adult siblings are welcome.

Beef cattle symposium to be held Feb. 15

The 29th annual San Juan Basin Extension Beef Cattle Symposium will be held from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. Feb. 15 at the Montezuma County Fairgrounds, 30100 U.S. Highway 160 in Cortez.

The symposium will focus on profitability, animal health and management. Topics will include: status of the livestock industry; leaving a lasting legacy; vaccination programs and protocol; native and non-native poisonous plants, identification and control; and calving difficulties.

Registration is $20 per person if postmarked by Friday and will include lunch and workshop materials. Late registration will be $25 per person.

For registration received after Friday, no lunch or materials will be guaranteed.

Geological presentation to take place Feb. 16

The Life-Long Learning Series, sponsored by Professional Associates through Fort Lewis College, will present “Geologic Diversity and Mineral Resource Extraction Activities in the Four Corners Region” by Jeff Brame at 7 p.m. Feb. 16 in Noble Hall, Room 130 of FLC.

The Four Corners exhibits a diversity of geology settings and geologic history that has created a wide range of extractable mineral deposits across the area. This presentation will examine and relate the occurrence and extraction activities for each of these deposits to a particular type of geologic setting.
