A documentary about the Silverton Standard & the Miner newspaper and the San Juan County Historical Society’s project to save the historic newspaper is scheduled to be aired on HDnet’s “World Report” program Feb. 21.
HDNet can be found on DirectTV and Dish Network.
The Standard is the oldest continuously operated newspaper on the Western Slope of Colorado, dating to 1875. It has been designated as a national historic site in journalism by the Society of Professional Journalists.
The Standard is planning to host a party to view the documentary at the Teller House Restaurant in Silverton from 7 to 8 p.m. Feb. 21. The restaurant will be closed, but drinks will be served.
HDNet’s “World Report” schedule describes its story on the Standard:
“One small mountain-town newspaper found a way out of closing its doors forever. The Silverton Standard became the country’s first nonprofit newspaper, the brainchild of the paper’s reporter, editor, photographer and op-ed columnist, who all happen to be the same guy.”
