Durango resident Jan Sue Jackson died of lymphatic cancer Sunday, Jan. 29, 2012, at home. She was 60.
Mrs. Jackson was born to Charles and Lois Wright on Sept. 14, 1951, in Durango. She grew up in Ignacio and graduated from Ignacio High School in 1969.
Later that year, she married David Jackson in Ignacio. The marriage later ended in divorce.
After living in California from 1970 to 1974, she returned to Southwest Colorado and attended cosmetology school in Cortez. Upon receiving her certification, Mrs. Jackson took care of a number of private clients.
In 1990, she moved to Albuquerque, where she worked at Olive Garden for the next nine years, returning to Durango in 1999. Mrs. Jackson worked for Hood Mortuary as an evening attendant and assisting at funerals from about 2002 to 2008, when she went to work for Dennis and Sharon Wetmore in their custodial business. She was a custodian at several businesses, including Coca-Cola Bottling of Durango.
Mrs. Jackson was a member of the Bible Study Fellowship, Durango Lion’s Club, the Pagosa Fiber Festival and the Alpaca Owners and Breeders Association. She was a faithful member of Mountainview Community Church in Durango.
“She was very courageous,” her friend Ellen Mooney said. “She always had hope and was very encouraging.”
Mrs. Jackson was preceded in death by her stepdaughter, Donna Jackson.
She is survived by her mother, Lois Wright, of Durango; brother, Steve Wright, of Arboles; and several nieces and nephews
A celebration of life will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 18, 2012, at Mountainview Community Church, which meets at Needham Elementary School, 2425 West Third Ave., in Durango.
