Local deputy’s daughter dies after illness

Cause of death currently unknown; 5-year-old had flu-like symptoms

The daughter of a La Plata County Sheriff’s Office deputy died early Sunday from unknown causes.

The girl, Kimber Michelle Brown, age 5, was the daughter of Mike Brown and Raelyn Anderson-Brown of Durango. Mike Brown is an investigator with the La Plata County Sheriff’s Office.

Emergency workers were notified of the girl’s death at 1:10 a.m. Sunday while she was staying at her grandmother’s house in the 31000 block of U.S. Highway 550, about 10 miles north of Durango, according to the sheriff’s office.

Attempts to revive the girl were unsuccessful.

The girl had flu-like symptoms for several days leading up to her death, said Dan Bender, spokesman for the Sheriff’s Office.

An autopsy was performed Monday, but La Plata County Coroner Dr. Carol Huser said no cause of death has been determined. It will be several weeks before test results are returned that might reveal more information, she said.

An obituary is on Page 2A today.

Her death is the second in two weeks to hit close to home for employees of the Sheriff’s Office.

Longtime Deputy Hollis Holland, 57, died Feb. 1 of a heart attack while snowmobiling near Molas Pass. A memorial service was held Saturday at Fort Lewis College. Mike Brown was close friends with Holland and spoke at Holland’s memorial service, Bender said.

Services for Kimber Brown are scheduled for 5 p.m. Wednesday at the Fort Lewis College Concert Hall.

A fund has been set up to assist the Brown family at the First National Bank of Durango. To donate, ask for the Kimber Brown Memorial Fund.
