The Durango Youth Lacrosse girls program took a big step into the club lacrosse world this summer, making its first team trip to the Vail Shootout on July 6–8.
Although the Durangatangs lost all six of their games in the high school division, the 12-girl team – just enough players to field a team with no substitutes – dramatically improved each game, coach Kelsey MacDonald said in an email to The Durango Herald.
The Durangatangs roster: Deryn Candelaria, Ruthie Edd, Angela Grogan, Siena Gumbiner, Shealee Hawkins, Tymbree Hawkins, Alyssa Montoya, Kelsey Pool, Megan Pope, Sophia Quick, Alyssa Spencer and Cori Truax.
Some of those girls never had played in a lacrosse game and “really stepped it up,” MacDonald said.
“It was a great learning experience for all involved. I even think the parents enjoyed watching and getting to learn the game of lacrosse,” MacDonald said.
Gumbiner, a Durango High School alumna who has signed to play lacrosse for MacDonald at Fort Lewis College, was named to the 13-girl, cross-bracket All-Tournament team.
