Fort Lewis College finished eight strokes off another tournament championship.
Regardless, the Skyhawks are off to a great start to their 2012 men’s golf season.
Grand View (Iowa) won the two-day Peaks Classic on Tuesday at Grandote Peaks Golf Club in La Veta at 14-over par, and FLC finished runner-up at 21 over.
FLC was followed in the standings by Rgis (39 over), CSU-Pueblo (40 over), Wayland Baptist (43 over), Trinidad State Community College (49 over), Dominican (55 over), Adams State (72 over), South Dakota Mines (92 over), Adams State B (110 over) and Oklahoma Panhandle State (124 over).
Josh Woodworth of Trinidad State was the only golfer to finish under par. He won medalist at 1-under par 215 over two days and three rounds of golf.
David Walter of Grand View finished second at 1-over par.
Kevin Santos of Dominican and Matt Weeks of Grand View tied for third at 2 over, and Sean Kato of CSU-Pueblo finished fifth at 3-over.
Zack Bryant, a freshman, led FLC at 4-over par and finished sixth overall.
Dillon Washburn, the Skyhawks’ freshman who won last week’s Grizzly Kick-Starter in Alamosa, tied for seventh at 6-over par. FLC freshman Lucas Laudick was in that group, as well.
FLC freshman John Thomson finished 12th at 8 over, and FLC sophomore Clark Riedberger finished 30th at 18 over.
FLC and its band of underclassmen next will play a Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference tournament Monday and Tuesday at The Bridges Golf & Country Club in Montrose.
