Mercy purchases Durango practice

Mercy Regional Medical Center on Monday acquired Southwest Surgical Associates, a practice that performs general, pediatric, thoracic and vascular surgical services.

Their services will not change, and they will stay at their current location in the Mercy Medical Plaza at 1 Mercado St.

The firm, which was founded in 1993, will be renamed the Mercy Surgical Associates.

Doctors David Deaver, Mark Stern and Jay Quayle and their clinic’s staff members will become hospital employees. The surgeons have more than 60 years of combined experience and are certified by the American Board of Surgery and Fellows of the American College of Surgeons.

“We’re looking forward to becoming part of the Mercy family,” Deaver said.

Mercy also has recruited a fourth general surgeon who will join the firm in early 2013.

Mercy Surgical Associates will be managed and operated by the Centura Health Physicians Group, which integrates multi-specialty and primary-care physicians with hospitals and services across the state,

“General and trauma services are the most important services we provide at the hospital because of the urgent and emergent needs of the communities we serve,” said Kirk Dignum, chief executive officer of Mercy, in a statement.

In the last 15 months, Mercy has also acquired a cardiology practice, an oncology practice and a family medicine practice.
