Durango dentistry volunteers at event

Junction Creek Family Dentistry attended the Colorado Mission of Mercy’s sixth annual event Sept. 28 and 29 at the Colorado State Fairgrounds in Pueblo.

There were 1,500 adults and children unable to afford dental services who were provided with free oral health-care services. More than 7,000 dental procedures were performed during the event, amounting to more than $1,000,000 in donated care.

John C. Hening, owner of Junction Creek Family Dentistry of Durango, and his son, Evan Hening, were among the volunteers. John Hening spent 11 hours performing root canals Sept. 28. He was the only general dentist volunteering to perform root canals. On Sept. 29, he performed oral surgery. Evan Hening, a junior at Durango High School, was able to help Sept. 28 with escorting and organizing patients.

Next year, the event will be held in Greeley.
