When Music in the Mountains kicks off its 27th season next summer, festival-goers are crossing their fingers that the program will include “Grammy winner” under the biography for conductor and music director Guillermo Figueroa.

Figueroa, who also is a world-class violinist, is nominated for a Latin Grammy award for Best Classical Album. The ceremony will be held in November in Las Vegas.

The album, “Cordero: Caribbean Concertos for Guitar and Violin,” includes two concertos for violin and string orchestra, “Concertino Tropical” and “Insula: Suite Concertante.”

The latter was written for and dedicated to Figueroa by the composer, Ernesto Cordero. Figueroa gave the premiere performance of the work in Zagreb, Croatia, in 2009 playing a 1686 Stradivarius, the Figuero Strad.

Also included on the CD is a guitar concerto written by Cordero and performed by virtuoso guitarist Pepe Romero, who has ties to our local festival. Romero’s brother Angel, a celebrated guitarist, performed with Music in the Mountains in 2009.
