Durango YAFL reaches 3 semis

Youth football teams survive and advance

Three of four Youth American Football League teams reached the semifinals in their respective postseason tournaments last weekend.

Durango Dolphins

The third-grade Durango Dolphins (3-6) lost 14-6 to the Farmington Panthers last Saturday in Kirtland, N.M. Austin Giehl scored the Dolphins’ final touchdown of the season.

Durango Colts

The fourth-grade Colts remained undefeated on the season with a 46-19 victory over the Aztec Tigers.

Aztec responded with 12 unanswered points.

Durango answered with three second-quarter touchdowns and a 33-12 halftime lead.

Woolverton regained the momentum with a 58-yard touchdown run, and Mestas followed with the extra point. Mestas rushed for a 15-yard touchdown run, then Weston Baken rushed for a 13-yard touchdown run; Woolverton added the extra point.

In the second half, Mestas scored from 48 yards out, and Haezen Mestas scored the extra point.

Durango Patriots

The fifth-grade Patriots survived a cold and windy early game in Cortez. They beat Montezuma-Cortez 7-6 on the strength of a successful extra-point attempt.

Howland intercepted a pass in the fourth quarter to seal the victory, too.

The Patriots will play the Farmington Coyotes at 3 p.m. Saturday in Farmington.

Durango 49ers

The sixth-grade 49ers came from behind to earn another one-point victory for Durango. Down 12-0 at the half, the 49ers rallied for a 13-12 victory over the Bloomfield Bobcats.
