Longtime Bayfield resident Ronald Gene Thompson died Tuesday, Oct. 16, 2012, at Mercy Regional Medical Center in Durango. He was 76.

Mr. Thompson was born Sept. 24, 1936, in Barneston, Neb., to Maurice and Marian (Versaw) Thompson. He grew up in Nebraska and Colorado. He graduated in 1955 from Saguache High School, where he was an amazing football player, his family said. He also attended Adams State College in Alamosa for a brief time.

Mr. Thompson worked for North American Aviation for a number of years. He then had a landscaping business in California before returning to Colorado and owning and doing mechanical work at the old Texaco in Bayfield. He also did part-time carpentry, truck driving and some mechanical work. He later worked for Blackwood and Nickles (Devon Energy), where he retired for the first time.

He could not stay retired for long, though, and returned to work at Lewis True Value in Bayfield. He retired again and then enjoyed spending time with his family and friends. Mr. Thompson was known for his sense of humor and personality in picking on people, his family said.

“He was inseparable from his wife, Sarah,” a family member said. “They did everything together and always wore the same color clothing.”

Mr. Thompson enjoyed hunting, casinos, hanging out with family, working on his ranch, taking care of his rentals in Bayfield and watching the Denver Broncos on TV. He was a member of the St. Ignatius Catholic Church.

Mr. Thompson was preceded in death by a grandson, Jaxon Formea.

He is survived by his wife, Sarah Thompson, of Bayfield, sons Jim Thompson of Gilbert, Ariz., and Chuck Thompson of Ignacio; daughters Elisha Thompson of Bayfield and Tabitha Formea of Ignacio; sisters Patricia McKinley of Alamosa, Sandra Bodley of California and Joyce Muhic of Rye; three grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews.

Visitation will be held from noon to 4 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 23, 2012, at Hood Mortuary Chapel. Recitation of the Rosary will follow at 6 p.m. at St. Ignatius Catholic Church in Ignacio. A funeral will be held at 10 a.m. Wednesday, Oct. 24, 2012, at St. Ignatius. The Rev. Douglas Hunt will officiate. Burial will take place at Pine River Cemetery in Bayfield.

A memorial account has been set up at Wells Fargo Bank for his wife, Sarah Thompson, to help with medical and funeral expenses.
