4 Durango students arrested for break-ins

Resident’s call of men pulling on car-door handles leads to arrests

Durango police arrested four Fort Lewis College students last week in connection with the burglaries of numerous cars and one business during the weekend of Oct. 13.

Police arrested Kris Jarldane, 18, Nicholas Chadwell, 18, Tachine Hayden, 18, and Samuel Adkisson, 18, on Oct. 15 and 16. All are freshman at the college and are from out of state.

They were charged with felony criminal trespass. Jarldane also was charged with felony burglary. The four were booked into the La Plata County jail. Bail for Chadwell, Adkisson and Hayden was set at $5,000. Jarldaneís bail was set at $25,000.

Police tracked down the men after a resident reported seeing individuals pulling on the door handles of cars in the parking lot Oct. 13 of the Allen Theatres next to Durango Mall.

The caller gave police a description and license plate number of the menís vehicle. The description matched the black Ford sport utility vehicle reportedly seen during a later incident at the Marriott Residence Inn in Durango.

Detectives obtained and served three warrants to search the menís dorm rooms and cars during which they recovered property from at least 12 other break-ins, Detective Trish Hutchens said.

While police were searching one of the menís property, other officers were dispatched to a burglary at the Alpine Clinic. Police discovered missing property from the clinic at Jarldaneís property, connecting him with that break-in.

Police have been working on more than 15 car break-ins that occurred during the last three weeks.

The investigation is continuing. Anyone with information regarding this case is asked to call Hutchens at 375-4733.
