Sand Creek stings DHS

No. 8 Scorpions come from behind to win

Despite jumping out to a halftime lead, the Durango High School boys soccer team’s season is over.

Durango, seeded 25th in the CHSAA Class 4A Boys Soccer State Championships, fell victim to a strong rally by No. 8 Sand Creek on Thursday, as the Scorpions captured a 4-2 win in the first round of the Class 4A postseason on a cold evening in Colorado Springs.

The Demons (9-4-3) managed to work their way in front after 40 minutes, rallying from an early 1-0 deficit to lead 2-1 behind a pair of goals from Zeb Soignier, scored within 59 seconds.

But Sand Creek unleashed a three-goal barrage after halftime to set up a meeting with No. 9 Cheyenne Mountain in the second round Saturday.

“Had a little wind against us in the second half, but I just think Sand Creek obviously was determined to get that lead back,” DHS head coach Kenny Wood said.

It’s the first time under Wood the Durango boys side has bowed out in the first round of the playoffs. DHS fell to Evergreen in Round 2 a year ago, and in 2010 the Demons made a run to the quarterfinals of the tournament.

Despite the loss, Wood said he was impressed with the way his team played in the first half, stringing together chances thanks to solid passing combinations.

“Everything seemed to go well for us. Lots of great soccer in the first half,” he said.

The two teams participated in a pronounced physical battle, Wood said, on a day that saw wintry conditions on the Front Range. DHS also played with goalkeeper Patrick Leach, who spent most of the year on junior varsity, without the services of Ben Marvin-Vanderyn and Will Sommerville.

“I think we have two black eyes and another injured, so it was a pretty physical game,” Wood said.

Still, the third-year head coach was pleased with what his charges accomplished despite the early postseason exit.

“We had a really great season. I didn’t think in all our losses and ties, nobody beat us. It’s one of those things, we just had some mental errors,” Wood said.
