A 15-year-old Bayfield girl was found at Walmart after a more than four-hour search Monday evening.
“Apparently, she had a disagreement with her mom and left the family vehicle two or three miles north of Bayfield,” said Butch Knowlton, the director of the La Plata County Office of Emergency Preparedness. “Her mother became concerned for her safety and called the (La Plata County) Sheriff’s Office.”
The La Plata County Sheriff’s Office requested help from La Plata County Search and Rescue and the Upper Pine Fire Protection District in the search. Knowlton did not know how many personnel in total were involved in the search, but he said there were at least 10 from La Plata County Search and Rescue alone.
“We’ve been closing all the loops,” he said, “contacting all her friends and trying to confirm that she’s safe.”
Just before 8 p.m., after about four hours of searching, they received information that the girl had been seen at Walmart, he said.
Durango Police Department officers went to Walmart to follow up on the report, where they found her safe and sound and transported her to family members, Knowlton said.
He was unable to release the girl’s name.
