Running unopposed, 6th Judicial District Attorney Todd Risberg was formally elected Tuesday to a second four-year term.

Im happy with what weve been doing in the last four years, Risberg said Tuesday. Weve assembled a great team, and were ready to do another four years.

Risberg, a Democrat, was first elected in November 2008 on a promise to rely more heavily on programs that rehabilitate low-level offenders rather than place them in jail.

During his first four years, Risberg supported efforts to expand drug courts, restorative-justice programs and implement a mental-health court.

He also called for a grand jury to be empaneled in La Plata County the first of its kind to be established here.

Local Republicans tried to court someone to run against Risberg, but the person didnt feel up to it, said Velbeth Jones, chairwoman of La Plata County Republicans.

We just didnt have anybody to put up, otherwise we would have put somebody up, she said.

Risberg said he thinks the reason no one challenged him is because he is doing what he promised, and it has been working. He joked: I guess the cynical view is nobody wants my job.

As the chief prosecutor of Archuleta, San Juan and La Plata counties, Risberg oversees 24 employees and a $1.9 million budget.
