County seeking volunteers for boards

Planning Commission seats among open slots

La Plata County is calling for volunteers to serve on an array of boards and commissions in 2013. The various advisory groups oversee aspects of the county ranging from planning to programming for senior citizens. In all, the county is accepting applications for positions on 21 boards and commissions.

The board of county commissioners selects and appoints candidates to those positions, which are advisory and not paid.

Planning Commission seats tend to attract the most applicants, said Sarah Jacobson, an administrative assistant with the county. The county is accepting applications for two seats on the commission, which advises the county on land-use planning. The commission found itself at the heart of the comprehensive plan debate and voted to terminate work on the plan last December.

Last year, the county received more applications than expected for two regular and one alternate position on the commission. Thirteen people applied for the vacant posts.

Commissioner Kellie Hotter attributed the increase to the then-recent controversy about the comprehensive plan.
