Propane safety encouraged in winter

The Colorado Propane Gas Association and Mesa Propane recommend that people follow these tips to avoid propane problems in the winter:

Keep snow and ice clear from the piping and regulators. Use a broom rather than a shovel.

Never use a stove for space heating, and never use outdoor propane appliances indoors or in enclosed areas. Never store, place or use a propane cylinder indoors or in enclosed areas.

If gas is smelled inside or outside of a home or business, follow these instructions:

Immediately put out all smoking materials and other open flames.

Leave the area immediately.

Turn off the main gas supply valve on the propane tank.

From a neighbor’s home or other building, call a propane retailer, 911 or the local fire department.

Do not return to the building until it is determined that it is safe to do so.

Before attempting to use any propane appliances, a propane retailer or a qualified service technician must check the system to ensure it is leak-free.
