Buy local gift ideas

From Cowboy Christmas to locally made, affordable gifts available

If crowds of people - or sitting in front of a screen while shopping online - aren't appealing ways of doing your holiday shopping, we have local businesses that offer attentive customer service and well-crafted items.

Basin Cooperative is hosting its 2016 Cowboy Christmas sale, with special prices on select animal feeds and jewelry by Montana Silversmiths. Each Friday in December will feature a gas card giveaway. Customers will also have the opportunity to enter in the national Purina sweepstakes for their chance to win a 2016 John Deere Gator TS, a trip for two to the Purina Animal Nutrition Center, or a YETI Tundra cooler.

"We are proud to serve the residents of our community and thank them for their continued loyalty," said Don Durkurt of Basin Cooperative. "We invite everyone to come celebrate our 2016 Cowboy Christmas sale with us!"

Another store with a Western twist, plus a lot more, is Bayberry Market at 271 Mountain View Drive in Bayfield, next to Brenda's Old West Cafe.

Bayberry Market is an artists' cooperative, meaning there are lots of one-of-a-kind items. Along with jewelry, pottery and home furnishings, there are jams and jellies from O'Hara's in Durango and lotions and soap from Aravah Organics, made with mineral water from Pagosa Springs.

Next week: we'll feature more local retailers and gift ideas.
