Lawrence Earl Merry

Former Durango resident Lawrence Earl Merry died Wednesday, Nov. 21, 2012, in Albuquerque. He was 81.

Known as “Larry,” he was born to James S. and Anna A. (Welsh) Merry on Sept. 1, 1931, in Durango. Mr. Merry graduated from the Abby in Cañon City, then returned to Durango, where he lived until joining the Army in 1952.

On June 2, 1952, he married Virginia Lucille Engler at St. Columba Catholic Church in Durango.

The Merry family moved to Albuquerque in 1959, where Mr. Merry joined the Carpenters Union Local 1319. In 1984, he joined the University of New Mexico Physical Plant Department, Remodeling Section.

Mr. Merry had been a member of AAAA balloon club since 1974. He and his family spent many summers boating at Navajo Reservoir.

Mr. and Mrs. Merry retired in 1996 so they could travel across the U.S. Mr. Merry’s retirement hobbies included woodcarving and supporting the UNM Lobos.

Mr. Merry is survived by his wife of 60 years, Virginia (Engler) Merry, of Albuquerque; children Carol Merry, Patrick Merry and Julie Merry, all of Austin, Texas; sister, Margaret Ann Merry, of Durango; one grandson; and a nephew.

A funeral Mass will be celebrated at 2 p.m. Monday, Dec. 3, 2012, at Risen Savior Catholic Church, 7701 Wyoming Blvd. in Albuquerque.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to one’s favorite charity.
