Longtime La Plata County resident Louis Joseph Piccoli died Thursday, Nov. 29, 2012, at Southwest Memorial Hospital in Cortez. He was 96.

Mr. Piccoli was born to Antonio and Christina (DeRenzo) Piccoli on Oct. 13, 1916, in Denver. His family moved to La Plata County when he was a little boy.

He grew up and lived his whole life in La Plata County, graduating from Durango High School in the mid-1930s and the “Old” Fort Lewis College in Hesperus.

He was a lifelong rancher and farmer.

The only break from his life in La Plata County was during World War II, when he served five years in the in the Army. He had been a member of the National Guard before being called up for the war. Mr. Piccoli fought in the European Theater in the 168th Field Artillery.

Upon his return, he met Dorothy Palizzi. The couple married in 1946 in Denver.

Mr. Piccoli was an avid hunter and enjoyed the outdoors.

He was a member of the La Plata-Archuleta and Colorado cattlemen’s associations.

Mr. Piccoli was preceded in death by his wife of 26 years, Dorothy Piccoli, in 1972.

He is survived his son, Ken Piccoli, of Cortez; daughter, Darlene Jones, of Dripping Springs, Texas; sister, Lorraine Bonan, of Cortez; four grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; and one niece.

A memorial service will be held at 10:30 a.m. Thursday, Dec. 6, 2012, at Hood Mortuary Chapel, 1261 East Third Ave., in Durango.
