Smith one-ups the Guru to win Week 14 Green

Don’t let the name – or his online handle – fool you.

He is Brian W. Smith, or “Brian” if you’re scouting the Durangoan’s online Gridiron Green profile.

It might sound vanilla, but the Week 14 local Green champion shares a first name with a certain animated talking dog and a surname with a certain Hall of Fame defensive end who calls himself Bruce Smith, and that sounds a lot like Brian Smith – both first names even start with a B and are five letters long.

There’s also Emmitt Smith and Jackie Smith, too. (Oddly enough, there are no Brian’s in the NFL Hall of Fame, though.)

But, yeah, dude’s smart.

Smith went 12-4 to win our 14th Green, one better than the Gridiron Guru, who was 11-5 and ran his overall record to 128.5-78.5 this season.

I was 3-for-3 in primetime games and scored upsets at Minnesota (vs. Chicago), at Washington (vs. Baltimore) and at Buffalo (vs. St. Louis.)

Cliff Pick of Lemars, Iowa, had all the right picks – well, almost, 15 out of 16 – to win the national Green.

Our local leaders: “edonelan” 144, “tholeman” 143, “daniel” 142, “gecko” 141, “packerfan” 140; while “tholeman” leads our Gridiron Gold with 143 points.

Thursday, Dec. 13

Cincinnati at Philadelphia, 6:20 p.m. (NFL Network) – Is Philly trending upward with its rookie QB? Nah. I still like the late-season Bengals, even if they did disappoint last weekend vs. Dallas. Pick: Bengals, 19-13. Line: Bengals by 3.

Sunday, Dec. 16

Green Bay at Chicago, 11 a.m. – The Packers are finding a run game and are starting to get their game tight. Pick: Packers, 27-17. Line: Packers by 3.

Tampa Bay at New Orleans, 11 a.m. – That loss to the Eagles is going to hurt. Pick: Saints, 30-27. Line: Saints by 3½.

Minnesota at St. Louis, 11 a.m. – The Rams are good against the run and even better at home. Pick: Rams, 21-20. Line: Rams by 3.

Indianapolis at Houston, 11 a.m. – Are the Colts chasing the Texans, or is it the other way around? Pick: Texans, 23-21. Line: Texans by 8½.

N.Y. Giants at Atlanta, 11 a.m. (KASA) – Are the Giants chasing the Falcons, or is it the other way around? Pick: Giants, 26-20. Line: Falcons by 1.

Washington at Cleveland, 11 a.m. – Don’t worry, RG3’s dad says the kid will play. Pick: Redskins, 17-13. Line: Off.

Jacksonville at Miami, 11 a.m. – The Jaguars are not good. Pick: Dolphins, 17-9. Line: Dolphins by 7.

Denver at Baltimore, 11 a.m. (KCNC, KREZ; KRSJ 100.5 FM) – These two teams are going in the opposite direction. Pick: Broncos, 28-27. Line: Broncos by 2½.

Carolina at San Diego, 2:05 p.m. – Both teams showed unexpected life last week. Pick: Chargers, 30-28. Line: Chargers by 3.

Detroit at Arizona, 2:05 p.m. – Finally, a winnable game for the Lions. Pick: Lions, 24-13. Line: Lions by 6½.

Seattle vs. Buffalo, at Toronto, 2:05 p.m. – The Seahawks notoriously are bad away from home, but this isn’t exactly a home game for the Bills, either. Pick: Seahawks, 24-10. Line: Seahawks by 3.

Kansas City at Oakland, 2:25 p.m. – Gross. Maybe Run-DMC will be worth watching. Pick: Raiders, 19-17. Line: Raiders by 3.

Pittsburgh at Dallas, 2:25 p.m. (KCNC, KREZ) – The ’Boys haven’t exactly played like men in their big, new, fancy stadium, and Big Ben is one more game removed from injury. Pick: Steelers, 23-17. Line: Cowboys by 1.

San Francisco at New England, 6:20 p.m. (KOBF, KUSA) – Now here’s a game worth the price of admission. The Patriots’ dismantling of the Texans on Monday Night Football was a message to the NFL. Do it again, and even the Old England will be all ears. Pick: Patriots, 24-17. Line: Patriots by 3.

Monday, Dec. 17

N.Y. Jets at Tennessee, 6:30 p.m. (ESPN) – There’s no way the Jets are getting into the playoffs, right? At 6-7 overall and despite their clown’s reputation in the New York tabloids, the Jets are in wild-card position with the Titans, the Chargers (home) and the Bills left on their schedule. Pick: Titans, 14-13. Line: Titans by 1.
