Beasts of the Southern Wild. HHHH A settlement off the New Orleans coast lives like a Third World country. Which, it turns out, ain’t so bad. (See review this page.) Rated PG-13.

Gaslight Cinema

(102 Fifth St. Next to the railroad depot, 247-8133)

Les Misérables. (No Ebert rating) Nineteen years for stealing a loaf of bread seems fair, right? Victor Hugo’s novel did well and the Broadway show did OK, too; it’s not a stretch to think that this movie might make a few dollars as well. Not rated.

Lincoln. HHHH Daniel Day-Lewis delivers a spot-on performance as the Great Emancipator in Spielbergian splendor. Rated PG-13.

Durango Stadium 9

(Next to Durango Mall, 247-9799)

Django Unchained. (No Ebert rating) Tarantino’s latest bloodbath has Jamie Foxx as an ex-slave who returns to the plantation owned by Leo DiCaprio to free his wife from bondage. If only this had actually happened. Rated R.

Parental Guidance. (No Ebert rating) Billy Crystal and Bette Midler are grandparents who have their own ideas about how to raise their ultra-modern grandkids when they get baby-sitting duty. This sounds just awful. Rated PG.

Jack Reacher. (No Ebert rating.) A military sniper who shot five “random” victims says he didn’t do it and Tom Cruise says so, too. So look out, crooks. Rated PG-13.

This is 40. (No Ebert rating.) They made a sequel to “Knocked Up” and this is it. If you don’t know what “Knocked Up” was, so much the better. Rated R.

The Guilt Trip. (No Ebert rating) Seth Rogan is an inventor who for some reason takes his mom (Barbra Streisand) with him on a road trip to hawk the thing nationwide. Imagine a few thousand miles in a car with Barbra Streisand and you get the gist of this one. Rated PG-13.

Monsters, Inc. 3D. (No Ebert rating) It’s like “Monsters, Inc.,” but in 3-D. Also in 2-D for some reason.

The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey. (In standard format and digital 3-D with surcharge; no Ebert rating.) In which we meet Bilbo, Gandalf and Gollum; kind of like a “Before They Were Rock Stars” for the Lord of the Rings crowd. Rated PG-13.

Rise of the Guardians. HHH Another one of those animated things. This one’s about an evil spirit launching some cataclysm on Earth and then there are these Guardians who protect all the children. Wouldn’t have been my first choice, but whatever. Rated PG.

Skyfall. HHHH This time, it’s up to Bond to save MI6 itself from extinction. Never ends for the poor guy, right? Rated PG-13.

Wreck-It Ralph. HHH Ralph (voiced by John C. Reilly) is a video-game doormat who goes on a spree across the arcade wreaking havoc. Rated PG.
