Seniors Outdoors! announces these upcoming activities:

A moderate snowshoe hike to Spud Lake will meet at 9 a.m. Saturday. The trip is 3 to 4 miles round trip with less than 700 feet elevation gain. The group will cook hot dogs for lunch. RSVP to John Martin at 385-5515 or john@martintelephone.com.

The Wednesday Wanderers will meet at 9:30 a.m. Wednesday at Santa Rita Park to walk the Animas River Trail to Home Depot and back. Dogs must be on leash per city ordinance. RSVP is not required. For more information, call Eric Pahlke at 247-1130.

A backcountry ski trip to the Andrews Lake area will take place Wednesday. Participants will ski a few laps up and down the slopes south of the lake. This trip is appropriate for wide backcountry skis or light telemark equipment. Skins will be needed. RSVP to Charles Berglund at 247-9747 or chasberglund@msn.com.

Downhill ski groups are forming for skiers and snowboarders of all abilities. Groups meet at the base of Lift 1 (the Six Pack lift) at Purgatory at Durango Mountain Resort. Some will coordinate to carpool from Animas City Park. The groups usually meet during the noon hour for lunch on the second floor at Dante’s when it is open. Trips can be arranged to other ski areas such as Wolf Creek or Telluride. For more information, call downhill ski group co-coordinators Bruce Rodman at 385-7899 or Jim Shadid at 884-4612.

Women’s skate-ski clinic to be held Saturday

A women’s skate-ski clinic will be held at 1 p.m. Saturday Jan. 5 at the Nordic Center at Purgatory. There will be classes for skiers of all ability levels.

The cost of the clinic is $15 for Nordic season-pass holders or $25 for other skiers. Rental skis are available at the Nordic Center.

Winter Discovery Walk to be held Jan. 12

San Juan Mountains Association will host the fourth program in the Southwest Colorado Winter Ecology Series, a “Winter Discovery Walk for Families,” from 10 a.m. to noon Jan. 12 in the Echo Basin area near Mancos.

The walk will focus on animals in winter as well as snow studies. Participants will learn about tracks and examine snowflakes.

The program is for children ages 4 to 10, accompanied by an adult. Snowshoes will be provided. Participants will meet at the end of County Road 566 in Mancos.

Ski for Education Day to be Jan. 21 at Purg

Purgatory at Durango Mountain Resort will host the 10th annual Ski for Education Day on Jan. 21 with discounted lift tickets and proceeds benefiting all Durango public schools.

Discounted tickets will be $35 per person, $10 of which will be donated to the schools. Tickets are available through 5 p.m. Jan. 18 at both City Markets, Albertsons, Nature’s Oasis and PJ’s Gourmet Market as well as in Farmington at Three Rivers Brewery and Zia Sporting Goods.
