Bondad resident Shirley Ione Short died Saturday, Jan. 5, 2013, at her home. She was 83.
Mrs. Short was born to Jacob Jay and Opal Lillie Dowler on April 6, 1929, in Moline, Kan. Her family moved too Durango when she was a little girl. One of six children, she graduated from Durango High School in 1947.
On Sept. 21, 1947, she married Neil K. Short at her parents’ home in Durango.
She was a housewife and worked at Basin Livestock Commission for many years. In her later years, she worked at J. C. Penney & Co. until her retirement.
Mrs. Short was a member of La Plata County Cowbelles and La Plata-Archuleta Cattleman’s Association.
She most enjoyed spending time with her grandchildren, sewing, embroidering, crocheting, farming, ranching and dancing at the Eureka Grange Hall.
Mrs. Short was preceded in death by her husband of 52 years, Neil K. Short; and grandson A.J. Franzen. Her brother Ronald Dowler died earlier the same day.
She is survived by her daughters Susie Sumner and Sandie Marlatt, both of Durango, Lois Franzen of Sidney, Mont., and Debbie Lee of San Mateo, N.M.; sister Reola Melanson of Yorktown, Texas; brother Dean Dowler of Durango; four grandchildren; five stepgrandchildren; two great-grandchildren; and eight stepgreat-grandchildren.
A funeral will be held at 2 p.m. Thursday, Jan. 10, 2013, at Hood Mortuary Chapel, 1261 East Third Ave. The Rev. Larry Haslam will officiate. Burial will occur at Elco Cemetery in Durango, 1657 County Road 213.
