No. 6 Bobcats triumph

Ignacio boys stop Dolores

The Ignacio High School boys basketball team put it’s No. 6-state ranking on the line Tuesday night in the San Juan Basin League opener at Dolores.

The Bobcats prevailed 69-55 in a game that proved frustrating to coach Chris Valdez and his coaching staff.

“The game was really never in doubt. But I never felt comfortable the whole night,” Valdez said. “I was really disappointed in our defense ... our guard defense gave them some open shots.”

The Bobcats started fast and built an eight-point lead.

But Dolores cut it to a single point at the end of the first quarter.

Ignacio led 39-26 at halftime.

“The thing that hurt us was Adison Jones has been sick ... almost all break. He got in ... he played maybe 5 minutes,” Valdez said.

Jones scored six points in the Ignacio victory.

Clayton Jefferson and Kelton Richmond scored 17 points each to lead the Bobcats (5-1 overall, 1-0 in the San Juan Basin League).

“Kelton Richmond led us in rebounding with eight,” Valdez said.

Justin Carver worked his way to 14 points.

“Austin Haire was back in the lineup,” Valdez said of another Bobcat who is recovering from illness.

Freshman Wyatt Hayes added nine points.

“We didn’t play that great. We can play better,” Valdez said.

The Bobcats will head to the Rumble in the Jungle Tournament in Aztec on Thursday, Friday and Saturday. They will open at 1 p.m. Thursday against Shiprock.

The Bobcats are ranked No. 6 in Class 2A this week by The Denver Post.
