The Durango High School wrestling team stayed off its back Friday on Day 1 of the Top of the Rockies wrestling tournament in Lafayette.
Eight of the team’s 12 wrestlers still remain in the tournament.
“Oh man, I’ll tell you, we started off pretty poorly in the first round, but it’s really kind of reflective of where we’re at,” said DHS head coach Doug Cuddie, who added that with five of the top 10 Class 5A schools, four of the top five 4A schools and four of the top 3A schools, Top of the Rockies is “the toughest tournament this state has to offer.”
But after a slow opening round, the Demons got moving, Cuddie said.
“It was rough, and the next round was excellent.”
The Demons’ great eight:
Matthew Lavengood (113), one win, one loss.
Hunter Hall (120), 1-1.
Clay Dillon (126), 2-1.
Dillon Anthony (132), 2-1.
Morgan Walts (138), 1-1.
Patrick Cunnion (170), 1-1.
Daniel Gustavson (220) 1-1.
At 152, Nick Tarpley was the only Demons’ wrestler who didn’t lose a match Friday, pinning his opponent in the first period. He remains undefeated on the season, too.
“We ended the day really well,” Cuddie said, “and hopefully we can pick up there” on Day 2 today.
