Top of the Rockies climb tests Demons wrestling

Tarpley takes fourth with first losses of the season

The Durango High School wrestling team didn’t summit the Top of the Rockies tournament first, but the point was really in the climb, anyway.

“We took a big step forward for our team and our program,” DHS head coach Doug Cuddie said of what he called the state’s toughest tournament.

Losing his first two matches of the season, Nick Tarpley was the lone placer of the Demons 12 total wrestlers, 10 of whom won at least one match over the weekend.

Tarpley took fourth place in losing to Ethan Wright of Pomona, who’s ranked third in Class 5A at 152, according to coloradopreps.com. He finished the tournament 6-2.

“Not bad at all,” Cuddie said.

The Demons also had two wrestlers who missed the podium by a match: Clay Dillon at 126 (5-2) and Daniel Gustavson at 220 (5-2).

“We’re pretty happy with it to be honest with you,” Cuddie said.

“That’s why we came here and got the matches we did.”
