Bobcats pick a pack of seconds

IHS wrestling has four runners-up at San Juan Basin League Tournament

A steady stream of second-place finishes was the story for the Ignacio High School wrestling team at the San Juan Basin League Tournament on Thursday night in Dolores.

The Bobcats picked up four runner-up finishes at the league tournament, according to head coach Bob Overturf:

Keith Joosten at 113 pounds.

Taylor Smith at 120 pounds.

Kyle Bailey at 126 pounds.

Ike Peña at 138 pounds.

“Just overall, the team wrestled tough,” Overturf said. “We still have a lot of work to do.”

Miguel Perez picked up a third-place finish at 145 pounds, as did Javan Webb at 195. Blaine Mickey finished fourth at 170 pounds for the Bobcats.

“I told them from where we started, with half the team never even wrestling ever, compared to now where we’re picking up some wins,” Overturf said of the Bobcats’ improvement.

Overall team results weren’t immediately available.

Ignacio will head to regionals starting Feb. 15 in Grand Junction.
