Purgatory Locals Day to benefit Animas High

Purgatory at Durango Mountain Resort will hold its third “Locals Day” of the season Sunday with discount lift tickets available in a benefit for Animas High School.

A coupon must be presented at the ticket office to receive the discount. Lift tickets will be $40 for adults, $32 for seniors and young adults and $25 for kids ages 6 to 12. Coupons are available in this week’s Telegraph or visit the AHS website at www.animashighschool.com and click on a link to a printable coupon on the left side of the homepage.

Durangoans winners at Chama Chili Classic

Local yoga teacher and outdoor sports performance coach Steve Ilg was first in his age group in three individual events and took second overall in the King of the Mountain competition to lead performances of Durango-area competitors at the 40th annual Chama Chili Ski Classic in New Mexico.

The Nordic and snowshoe racing took place during two days of competition during Martin Luther King Jr. weekend just east of Chama at elevations around 10,000 feet on Cumbres Pass.

King of the Mountain was determined by a combination of results in the 10-kilometer classic and 5K snowshoe races. Ilg won both races in his age group. He also was the overall winner of the 7.5K freestyle.

Sandra Dawagahti Lee of Durango also won her age group in the snowshoe race and finished 15th overall.

15K freestyle – Caleb Thompson, first in age group, second overall; Sabina Kuss, first in age group, 17th overall.

10K Classic – Ben Capelin, first in age group, 11th overall; Ali Brown, third in age group, 39th overall; Shannon Cruise, fourth in age group, 40th overall; Seamus McMorrow, 12th overall; Billy Foster, sixth in age group, 22nd overall; Ryan Doty, sixth in age group, 35th overall; Lani Foster sixth in age group, 46th overall; Sierra Foster, seventh in age group, 47th overall.

Durango Nature Studies announces programs

Durango Nature Studies will offer these programs:

Sylvester Allred, author of Rascal the Tassel Eared Squirrel, will talk from 10:30 to 11:30 a.m. Feb. 16 at the Durango Public Library, 1900 East Third Ave.

A full-moon snowshoe hike under the Snow Moon will take place from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. Feb. 25 at Haviland Lake. The hike is free for members, and $10 for nonmembers.
