Western New Mexico steals victory from Fort Lewis men

The Fort Lewis College men’s basketball team was in position to take a road win over Western New Mexico at Silver City on Friday night.

But a 6-0 closing flurry by the Mustangs netted a hard-fought 66-64 victory over the Skyhawks .

“That was probably the most disappointing loss of the season because we had opportunities there at the end,” a frustrated Bob Hofman said after Friday’s loss.

The Fort Lewis College head coach said the Skyhawks had chances at the end to extend their lead and win the game.

“But we missed a layup ... we just didn’t make plays,” Hofman said after the Fort Lewis men fell to 14-4 overall, 11-4 in the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference.

Western new Mexico improved to 8-12, 7-9 in conference.

Alex Herrera, the former Ignacio High School standout, led the Skyhawks with 20 points. He was 8 of 8 from the field.

He also had 12 rebounds.

Torrey Udall added 14 points. Nick Tomsick scored 10.

Lucio Luttrell led the Mustangs with 25. Chad Carter added 20.
