Ice-cold Bobcats finally get warm

Ignacio High School boys gear up for a showdown with Monticello

The Ignacio High School boys basketball team survived an ice-cold first half Saturday against Mancos to win 59-43.

IHS, ranked No. 6 in Class 2A by The Denver Post, struggled mightily and trailed 6-5 at the end of the first quarter.

After hitting only 8 of 43 shots from the field in the first half, the Bobcats managed a slender 27-20 halftime lead.

“We were 4-for-20 from the 3-point line in the first half. We couldn’t hit anything,” said IHS head coach Chris Valdez.

Mancos played a tough, physical game, he said.

“We were not attacking the basket. I chewed them pretty good at halftime,” Valdez said.

“In the second half, we went to the high post. And Kelton (Richmond) and Justin (Carver) played well from there,” Valdez said.

Clayton Jefferson led IHS with 14 points. Wyatt Hayes and Richmond scored 12.

The Bobcats (13-3, 5-0 San Juan Basin League) will host the No. 3-ranked team from Utah – Monticello High School – in a Tuesday night showdown at IHS.
