In his first season as head coach, Todd McMenimen picked up the Wolverines right where legendary coach Herb Stinson left off.
Bayfield High School has six wrestlers in the Class 3A regional semifinals at Monte Vista.
“We had a good day,” McMenimen said. “We wrestled well. We came out with attitude. I think wrestling two of the top teams in the state last week really paid off.”
Fresh off the mats against the No. 1- and No. 3-ranked teams in the state, Colter McMenimen (126 pounds), Allec Rodriguez (132), Drake Rhodes (138), Joe Zink (145), Michael Goodman (182) and Matt Cerdas (220) will represent BHS in today’s championship semifinals.
Three wrestlers are alive in today’s wrestlebacks, including one unlikely BHS heavyweight in Matt Eckstein.
“Matt was one of the few kids that just didn’t get it done,” coach McMenimen said. “He wrestled one of the most athletic kids we saw there, the kind of kid that Matt typically struggles with.”
Eckstein was pinned and will have to wrestle back through the consolation bracket to finish top four and advance to the CHSAA Class 3A Wrestling State Championships next weekend in Denver.
Taylor Winch (113) and Tyler Beebe (120) also are in today’s wrestlebacks in Monte Vista.
“We’ve got some tough, tough semis in the morning, but they’re all tough at this point,” coach McMenimen said. “They’re certainly winnable.”
