Doug Cuddie has coached some pretty good wrestlers over the last four years at Durango High School.
Some pretty good state-tournament caliber wrestlers.
This year, the Demons’ fourth-year wrestling coach was “hoping for six or seven” wrestlers to advance out of regionals to the CHSAA Class 4A Wrestling State Championships.
Six is the most he’s ever taken to the state meet.
After the first day of regionals Friday in Montrose, the Demons have nine out of 12 wrestlers still alive – four in the championship semifinals and five alive in the consolation bracket.
Matt Lavengood (113 pounds), Clay Dillon (126), Nick Tarpley (152) and Daniel Gustavson (220) will wrestle in the championship semifinals today in Montrose.
“It’s great to be in the semis; we just gotta get it done,” Cuddie said.
Dillon Anthony (132), Morgan Walts (138), Garrett Marcum (145), Lucas Sinnig (160) and Patrick Cunnion (170) will have to wrestle their way back into the mix if they’re to reach state.
The top four advance from the regional tournament.
“(Today) is do or die time,” Cuddie said.
