Nine Bayfield wrestlers took to the mats Saturday morning.

Nine Bayfield wrestlers took to the podium Saturday evening.

Every Wolverines’ wrestler that remained in their Class 3A regional tournament after the first day Friday in Monte Vista placed Saturday, and the Bayfield High School wrestling team will be taking seven wrestlers to the CHSAA Class 3A Wrestling State Championships next weekend in Denver.

“Had a really good day (Saturday),” BHS head coach Todd McMenimen said. “I thought we wrestled about as well as we could’ve expected to wrestle.”

Colter McMenimen (126 pounds) was the Wolverines’ top wrestler in second.

Drake Rhodes at 138 and heavyweight Matt Eckstein each took third place.

Three Wolverines took fourth: Allec Rodriguez at 132, Joe Zink at 145 and Matt Cerdas at 220.

Taylor Winch (113), Tyler Beebe (120) and Michael Goodman (182) took fifth.

The top four finishers in each weight class qualified for state, which will start Thursday at the Pepsi Center, but because Beebe won his wrestleback, he bumped the fourth-place finisher and earned the state spot instead.

“That’s a real good haul this year,” the first-year head coach said. “I don’t think I could’ve asked for more.”
