Host families sought for exchange students

ASSE International Student Exchange Programs is seeking local host families for international high school boys and girls.

These students are 15 to 18 years old and are coming to this area for the upcoming high school year or semester.

The students, who are conversant in English, will arrive shortly before school begins and return at the end of the school year or semester.

Each student is fully insured, brings his or her own spending money and expects to contribute to his or her share of household responsibilities, as well as be included in normal family activities and lifestyles. Families can choose their students.

Discovery Museum to screen documentary

Durango Discovery Museum, 1333 Camino del Rio, will host Free Community Cinema with Rocky Mountain PBS at 5:30 p.m. today.

“The Powerbroker” by Bonnie Boswell will be screened. The film follows civil-rights leader Whitney Young as he navigates a divided society. Donations will be welcome.

Liberty School to host Visitors Day

The Liberty School will host a Visitors Day from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. Thursday on the second floor at 215 E. 12th St.

School will be in session. The school is a small, private school that maximizes the potential of dyslexic, gifted and twice exceptional (both gifted and dyslexic) children.

Liberty schedules cardboard sled race

The Liberty School will host its tournament-style Cardboard Sled Race 2013 at 9 a.m. March 2 at Chapman Hill.

People may design and build a sled out of only cardboard, duct tape, zip ties and paint.

The money raised money will go to Liberty’s sister school in Sudan, Africa. Each year, the Liberty School community service team organizes a fundraising event and sends the proceeds to the Djabal Refugee Camp School. The entry fee is $5 per team member. The sister school will use the money to buy classroom supplies, books, teacher training and materials for facilities.

LPEA scholarships available to seniors

The deadline for high school seniors to apply for scholarships and awards available through La Plata Electric Association is March 1.

All high school seniors in La Plata and Archuleta counties, including home-school students, who receive their electricity from LPEA, are eligible to apply.

LPEA directly offers the LPEA Scholarship and LPEA/John Voelker Memorial Scholarship, plus provides for additional affiliated rural electric scholarships/awards offered by Tri-State Generation and Transmission and Basin Electric Power Cooperative.

Continuing education available at FLC

The Fort Lewis College Continuing Education Program will offer these classes:

“Alternative Construction Methods” will be taught by Mark Sullivan beginning today. This class will examine alternative construction methods and materials, many of which require limited skill, simple tools and relatively little expense. The cost is $119 for six classes Wednesday evenings from today to April 3.

“Writing Creative Nonfiction” will be taught by Will Gray, a writer who spent 33 years with National Geographic. This course focuses on the genre of creative nonfiction, with emphasis on literary style, careful observation, personal experience and thorough knowledge of the subject. The cost is $174 for eight classes Tuesday evenings from March 12 to April 30.

Durango High to offer registration information

The Durango High School Counseling office will host an informational session about course registration and selection for the 2013-14 school year from 6:30 to 7:30 p.m. Monday in the Durango High School auditorium.

All current eighth- to 11th-grade parents are welcome. This session will begin with an overview of the course selection process, graduation requirements and then move into more specific upperclass opportunities such as Early College and AP courses.

Sunnyside to host St. Patrick’s party

Sunnyside Elementary School will hold its annual St. Patrick’s Day Party from 5:30 to 8 p.m. March 16.

This event is sponsored by the Sunnyside Independent Parent/Teacher Association to raise money to help pay for computer-based literacy and math programs that provide support and acceleration for students. The event will feature home-cooked corned beef or smoked brisket with all of the sides, music by the Latta Mac Celtic Duo, “Green Games” for children, and the cake and pie auction.

Tickets are on sale at the school. Dinner tickets are $10 for adults, $5 for children 6-12 and free for children 5 and younger. One $5 wristband gives children a chance to play games all evening.

El Diablo fundraiser to be held at Seasons

Seasons Rotisserie & Grill, 764 Main Ave., will donate a portion of its proceeds to Durango High School’s El Diablo newspaper at 5 p.m. March 5.

The money will allow the editors of the paper to take a trip to New York City for the Columbia Scholastic Press Association conference.

Durango school board to meet Tuesday

The Durango School District School Board will meet at 5:30 p.m. Tuesday in the board room at the central office, 201 E. 12th St.

Needham Elementary School will be the school highlight.

Herald Staff
