Name-calling accomplishes nothing

In Ken Van Zee’s letter (Herald, Aug. 12), there was some name-calling that accomplishes nothing.

First off, I do not appreciate him calling me a bigot, gun nut or Fox News junkie. I am, however, a Christian who is capable of getting along with others regardless of race, views or other conflicts. Yes, I enjoy guns and occasionally watch Fox News. As far as no solution goes, how about we start taking care of ourselves rather than rely on the government to provide? Did it ever dawn on Van Zee that the present government may have no interest in him?

He talks about alternative energy. What happens to the atmosphere when we have millions of solar panels pointing back at the sun? Is it the same as using a mirror to reflect an intensified beam in another direction? How about wind energy? What happens to the strength of the wind when it is confronted with a wind-generation farm? How does this affect the storm patterns? I think rather than call names, let’s find out more about the alternative process first. Is it really better than what we have now?

How about the credo “guns don’t kill people, people do”? That is correct – a gun is a mechanical device that uses a metal tube to expel a projectile. It is not, however, capable of self-expulsion. It relies on a human to do that; therefore, the human does the actual crime, not the gun. It is merely a tool.

He calls me a redneck, I say thank you. Rednecks are a God-believing, down-to-earth kind of people who care for family and friends. These people are always willing to help someone in need. They also take care of their own and do not need a strong government presence to do so.

Calling everyone names who do not share your beliefs accomplishes nothing but putting egg on your face.
