Two local businesses earn certification

Local businesses Durango Coffee Co. and For the Birds are now Resource Smart Certified as “Ramping Up” for upgrading their lighting and completing three program assessments, the Resource Smart Business Program announced.

The two businesses enlisted the help of the Resource Smart Business Program to reduce energy consumption, increase worksite wellness and promote sustainable business practices in the workplace. Durango Coffee Co. and For the Birds have upgraded their lighting to LED, resulting in annual savings of more than $1,197 and $305, respectively. For the Birds is also working on installing more insulation and has updated its mission and vision to incorporate sustainability principles.

The Resource Smart Business Program is a voluntary six-step certification program designed to help businesses increase their competitive advantage by reducing their resource consumption. It is a federally funded collaboration of several local entities.

La Plata County businesses are invited to participate in the program by applying at www.resourcesmartbusiness.com. For more information or to apply for certification, visit the website or call Amanda Saunders at 259-1916.
