Encaustic painting class offered at DAC

The Durango Arts Center, 802 East Second Ave., will host an encaustic painting class with Michael Billie from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. March 29.

Encaustic painting is a technique using beeswax mixed resin and pigments. In this introductory workshop, students will learn how to make their own wax mediums and mix colors and what materials are required to do so. Explorations using a hot box, embedding objects and fusing will be covered.

The class is open to all skill levels; beginners are welcome. Enrollment is limited to 10 students.

The cost is $120 for DAC members ($150 for nonmembers) and a $10 materials fee is paid directly to the instructor on the day of the workshops.

‘Wonderland’ coming to Bayfield High

Bayfield High School Theatre Club will perform “Wonderland!,” the musical misadventures of a girl named Alice, by James DeVita with music by Bill Francoeur. It is based on the book Through the Looking Glass by Lewis Carroll.

Showtimes are at 7 p.m. today, Saturday, Thursday and March 22 in the BHS Cafetorium. The play is directed by Jeff Misener, with musical direction by Derek Smith.

Tickets cost $6 for students and senior citizens, $8 for adults. Admission is free for children 5 and younger.

Blackshear to speak at Photography Club

The Durango Photography Club will meet at 7 p.m. Thursday in the Banquet Room at the Holiday Inn & Suites, 21636 U.S. Highway 160.

The first half of the meeting will feature Chris Blackshear, who will present some of the most interesting images he created using Photoshop Elements. The second half of the meeting will be the Monthly Challenge in which members share their themed photographs and receive critique if desired.

Deadline extended for artist’s residency

The Durango Arts Center will offer its second one-week Artist-in-Residency program for contemporary and performing art. The residency program is part of DAC’s 2014 Art Revolution and is in collaboration with Willowtail Springs Preserve/Education Center outside Mancos.

The one-week residency supports DAC’s Annual Juried Exhibit, showing July 11 through Aug. 9.

The one-week residency is available April 12 through June 27 at Willowtail Springs. Applicants must be a DAC member 18 or older. Applications will be judged on the merits of the proposal. The winner will be invited to present a product from their residency at the reception of the Annual Juried Exhibit on July 11.

Applications are due Wednesday and can be emailed to the Willowtail Springs Preserve/Education Center director at info@wtsnpec.org. Notification will go out April 6.
