Call it one more for the road.

The Fort Lewis College women’s lacrosse team used a balanced effort to ruin Adams State’s season opener 10-4 on Saturday in Alamosa, the Skyhawks’ final intrastate game before heading out on their annual East Coast road trip over spring break.

FLC (2-1, 2-1 Western Intercollegiate Lacrosse Association) led 3-1 at halftime before pulling away with a seven-goal second half. Six different Skyhawks scored, led by Jam Vertner’s three-goal effort and a pair each from Kathryn Dunn and Kylie Smith.

Ally Kvidera had a goal and three assists; FLC had an assist on six of its 10 goals.

“Again, that’s just a tribute to playing as a team, and a lot of goals were assisted as well,” FLC head coach Kelsey MacDonald said. “They came from girls moving off the ball, passing to each other and a lot of assisted plays.”

A trio of Skyhawks, their coach said, had quality defensive efforts: Katlyne Duffey had eight groundballs and caused seven turnovers; Amanda Hoffmeyer had seven caused turnovers and scooped up six groundballs; Amanda Cawker had seven groundballs and forced six turnovers.

As a result, Durango High School alumna and FLC freshman goalie Alyssa Spencer faced only five shots on goal.

“They stepped up and played as a unit, and that was what we had been looking for,” MacDonald said.

FLC will open its spring break trip at Chestnut Hill in Plymouth Meeting, Pa., at 1 p.m. Monday.
