School security a misuse of resources

In reference to the story on “school security” (Herald, Aug. 25.): This is a terrible waste of resources and an awful example for students.

Heinous acts of violence make the 24-hour, global news – something horrible is happening to someone, somewhere, all the time – but good leadership would point out that these are rare events. A good leader would tell the community that rather than focus on the fear, we should direct our attention to the things that do matter, things that help develop a new generation of responsible citizens.

As President Franklin Roosevelt said, “The only thing we have to fear is fear itself – nameless, unreasoning, unjustified terror which paralyzes needed efforts to convert retreat into advance.”

A real danger for our students is that resources are being wasted on things that don’t help the students. Children are being taught, by example, to waste brain power and money on things that are not important. Meanwhile, the things that make a difference, but don’t show up in the news, are being neglected.

The school administration is setting a very bad example. It seems obvious that these “school security” measures are mostly to help the administration cover their butts in the event something horrible happens in Durango. That is not leadership, that is a self-serving waste of resources.

Enough with the excuses! Enough of the “nameless, unreasoning, unjustified terror.” It is time for the school board to bring in a superintendent with real leadership ability, one who puts students first and advances education.

Our current superintendent, Dan Snowberger, perpetuates fear and blames external circumstance. Under his tenure the schools are setting a worse and poorer example for the next generation of conscientious, responsible citizens and leaders. Let’s bring in somebody who can set a positive example for our children, somebody we would like our children to emulate.
