Liberty School to host Visitors Day

The Liberty School will host a Visitors Day from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. Thursday at the school, 215 E. 12th St. on the second floor.

All are welcome. The Liberty School is a small, private school that maximizes the potential of dyslexic, gifted and twice exceptional (gifted and dyslexic) children.

Park school to host Scholastic Book Fair

The annual Park Elementary School buy-one-get-one-free Scholastic Book Fair will be held from Friday to March 29.

The hours will be from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. Monday to Thursday and 8 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. Fridays. Books will include reference, sports, picture, bilingual and fiction.

Musical instruments sought for students

Donations of new or used musical instruments, including amps and mics, are sought for a statewide after-school music program for underprivileged students.

Continuing education classes available at FLC

The Fort Lewis College Continuing Education Program will offer these classes:

“Tips and Tricks for the Writing-Challenged” will be offered by Mandy Mikulencak from noon to 4 p.m. March 30. This course strengthens writing and grammar skills. The cost is $59.

“Getting Paid to Talk: Make Money with Your Voice” will be held April 1. This class will explore aspects of voice-over work for television, film, radio, audio books, documentaries and the Internet in the area. The cost is $59.

Preschool, kindergarten registration to be held

Registration for Durango School District 9-R 2013-14 preschool and kindergarten programs will be held from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. at these schools:

Needham Elementary School on Friday.

Sunnyside Elementary School on Tuesday.

Riverview Elementary School on March 27.

Park Elementary School on March 29.

Families do not need an appointment. People should bring the child’s birth certificate, immunization information and a utility bill that shows proof of residency.

People who missed the date for their school may participate in registration for that school at any other school site on the dates listed above. Forms also are available online.

Needham to host safety meeting Thursday

Needham Elementary School will host a safety meeting from 5:30 to 6:15 p.m. Thursday or by appointment.

School administrators and parents will develop solutions and implementation strategies to address previously identified safety issues. Topics for discussions include traffic patterns – especially during dropoff and pickup times, playground safety and visitor sign-in when entering the school campus.

Scholarships available to seniors in 9-R

Durango Foundation for Educational Excellence will offer six scholarships to graduating seniors from Durango School District 9-R high schools, subject to individual scholarship criteria.

The application deadline is 5 p.m. April 1.

Grants available to 9-R staff members

The Durango Foundation for Educational Excellence has a grants program open to any teacher, staff member or administrator in Durango School District 9-R.

In 2013, there will be three grant streams available: including Core Grants, for serious academic needs not covered by the 9-R budget; Crane Arts Education grants, which support the fine and performing arts; and Student Competition Travel grants to assist academic teams moving beyond the local level in their competition efforts.

The deadline for Core Grants is April 1 with review to follow. Other grants will be accepted the first of each month during the school year, and reviewed on a rolling basis. A grant proposal will not be considered without district approval. However, district approval does not guarantee grant approval.

Durango Foundation for Education Excellence will honor one teacher from each school level and three district staff members.

Family dance to be held in Ignacio

Ignacio schools Relay for Life Team will host its fifth annual family dance from 7 to 9 p.m. April 12 in the Ignacio Elementary School gym.

Music will be provided by DJ Oscar Cosio. The event will feature a bake sale and a chance to design a luminaria for loved ones who have battled cancer. The luminarias will be displayed at the Relay for Life event June 28.

There also will be a door-prize drawing donation for some Ignacio Bobcat collectibles.

Ignacio Explorers Club to host yard sale

Ignacio Elementary Explorers Club will host a yard sale from 8:30 a.m. to 2 p.m. May 4 in the elementary school parking lot.

Space is available for rent for $15. People can keep the profits from their sales. Pets are not welcome. No food or drink may be sold.
