Von Miller might have a new pass-rushing partner by week’s end.
Free agents Dwight Freeney and John Abraham are set to visit Denver today, 48 hours after the Broncos submitted a new contract proposal to Elvis Dumervil.
Freeney, 33, and Abraham, 34, both are older and less productive than Dumervil, 29, but might make better financial sense for the Broncos, who had to cut Dumervil last week to avoid paying him $12 million in 2013.
Coach John Fox said at the NFL owners meetings in Phoenix this week that the Broncos were still hoping to re-sign Dumervil.
“He’s a guy we obviously like,” Fox said. “He’s played good football for us. He’s a defensive captain, and we like him as a player. It’s just unfortunate and we’ve been through the timeline. It’s just unfortunate things happen. But we kind of regrouped, and we’ve got different options now, and we’ve looked at those options, and he’s one of them.”
Dumervil had 20½ sacks the last two seasons.
Freeney has 107½ career sacks in 11 seasons, 13½ in the last two.
Abraham has 122 sacks in 13 NFL seasons, 19½ sacks over his last two.
