Child care workers to learn about safe infant sleeping

The Early Childhood Council of La Plata County will offer a free infant safe sleep training from 9 to 11 a.m. Nov. 14 at the Early Childhood Council of La Plata County Training Center, 130 Rockpoint Drive, Suite C.

New Colorado child care regulations require that all early childhood professionals who care for children ages 0 to 12 months complete infant safe sleep training by Dec. 31.

Adult Education Center to offer intensive English

The Durango Adult Education Center is offering an intensive English class for beginners.

Classes will be offered from 9 to 11 a.m. five days a week. Advanced registration is required.

Students in District 9-R will not have school Friday

There will be no school for student’s in kindergarten to 12th grade in Durango School District 9-R on Friday.

For two nights, Big Picture to open haunted house

Big Picture High School will host its annual haunted house from 7 to 10 p.m. Friday and Saturday.

This year’s theme is “Phobia,” and tickets will be $6 or $3 with any student ID.

Because of the nature of the content, admission will be limited to children ages 9 and older.

Sunnyside Elementary to host Halloween Carnival

The 32nd annual Sunnyside Elementary Halloween Carnival and Silent Auction will be held from 5 to 8 p.m. Friday.

Admission is a book or baked good per family. Game tickets will be sold at the door for 25 cents each.

Activities will include a haunted house, book walk, Plinko, bingo, bouncy house and more. Foods and desserts will be on sale. The silent auction will include gift baskets. All proceeds will benefit Sunnyside’s reading and computing programs.

Durango High School winter red cards due

Durango High School winter sports red cards are due Nov. 6 for students who want to participate in winter sports.

All paperwork and fees should be turned into the Activities Office.

Park Elementary School to mark Veterans Day

The students of Park Elementary School will host a special musical performance in honor of Veterans Day from 8:45 to 9:15 a.m. Nov. 11.

The students are also preparing a banner to present to the Durango VFW.

Hispanic families can learn about college applications

Hispanic presenters will speak about their experiences growing up in the area at “Towns United in Education: Stories, Struggles and Successes” from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Nov. 14 at Ignacio Middle School, 222 County Road 320, Ignacio.

People will receive information about the services available in each community for Hispanic families and learn how to enroll in college, including information about available post-secondary options, financial aid and more.

The event is designed for Spanish-speaking parents, but all are welcome. For more information, call the Durango School District 9-R administration office at 247-5411.

Animas High School invites you to fundraiser

A game show-themed fundraiser celebrating Animas High School and sharing its story will be held from 6 to 9 p.m. Nov. 18 at the Henry Strater Theatre, 699 Main Ave.

The Osprey Games will feature three teams of teachers and students competing for bragging rights and prizes all while sharing the Animas story with the Durango community. Donations will be accepted. Appetizers and a cash bar will be available.

DHS schedules new time for meeting principal

Durango High School’s November “Conversation with the Principal” has been rescheduled to Nov. 11. The time also has changed to 8:30-9:30 a.m.

Local educators to discuss the future of education

A discussion about the future of education in Durango will be held at 7 p.m. Nov. 4 at the Fort Lewis College Community Concert Hall.

The evening will begin with a screening of the education documentary “Most Likely to Succeed.” After the film, there will be a panel discussion featuring education leaders from Mountain Middle School, Animas High School, Durango School District 9-R and Fort Lewis College Department of Education.

Tickets are available through Mountain, AHS, FLC and the Durango School District. A limited number of tickets will be available that evening.

All AHS juniors will take the PSAT during school Wednesday.

Ally Johnson’s 10th-grade humanities classes will present “The Danger of a Single Story” from 6 to 8 p.m. Wednesday at the Steaming Bean Co., 915 Main Ave. This will be an authors’ reading, sharing excerpts from their original historical fiction, which examines the legacy of imperialism in Africa.

Sara Price’s ninth-grade humanities students will exhibit handcrafted identity masks and essays they have written about how they have been socialized to become who they are from 5 to 7 p.m. Thursday at the Durango Public Library, 1900 East Third Ave.

In conjunction with their mini-project about cellular biology, Tina Hott’s students are co-hosting a blood drive with United Blood Services from 11:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Thursday in the AHS Commons. To make an appointment, visit http://bit.ly/1M2cBO6.

There will be no classes Friday as AHS staff members will participate in professional development work.

The School Excellence Committee will meet from 5 to 6:30 p.m. Monday at AHS.

Spanish 1 and 2 students in Jenny McKenzie and Susy Raleigh’s classes will present Exhibición del Día de los Muertos from 5 to 8 p.m. Tuesday at the Animas City Theater. The exhibition will include food, face-painting, crafts, a display of skulls and a screening of the movie “Book of Life,” beginning at 6:30 p.m.

Matt Dooley’s ninth-grade humanities students will exhibit their handcrafted identity masks and essays from 5 to 6:30 p.m. Nov. 4 at the Durango Public Library.

Dave Heerschap’s advanced physics students will test the design of their trebuchets by chucking pumpkins at 4:30 p.m. Tuesday on the hill behind the AHS campus in Twin Buttes.

Animas High School to add parent-elected director

AHS is adding a parent-elected director. A job description including timeline for completing applications, mandatory meeting requirements and how the election process will be completed is available at http://animashighschool.com/parent-elected-director-ped-letter.

This new position is open to anyone in the community. People do not have to be a parent to run.

AHS is seeking a director experienced in financials, facilities and/or development.

On average each board member will spend three to six hours per week on board work, attend a monthly board meeting and key AHS events and lead at least one committee.

Applications are due by 3 p.m. Monday at AHS. Hard copies can be turned in to the main office, and digital copies can be emailed to Dusty Grannis at tech@animashighschool.com.

Interested candidates must attend a mandatory board of directors meeting Nov. 11 for orientation. Parents are encouraged to attend the meeting to ask questions and hear from candidates to help in their decision-making process.

Election ballots will be sent home with students Nov. 13 and are due by 3 p.m. Dec. 7.
