Former Durango resident Eva Mary Jones died Saturday, April 20, 2013, at Southwest Memorial Hospital in Cortez. She was 94.

Mrs. Jones was born to Bill and Lucy (Johnson) Pryor on Jan. 5, 1919, in Marvel. She grew up in Marvel and graduated from high school there.

After high school, she earned her nursing degree at Mercy Hospital in Denver in 1939. She worked at Mercy Hospital until February 1942, shortly after the bombing of Pearl Harbor, when she enlisted in the Army.

Mrs. Jones served as a first lieutenant under Gen. George S. Patton and was stationed in hospitals in England and a hospital seven miles from Paris.

On Feb. 7, 1948, she married Bobby Eugene Jones in Aztec.

After serving in the Army, she worked as a nurse for Mercy Hospital in Durango for 20 years. Mrs. Jones went on to be the head nurse of the Intensive Care Unit at Southwest Memorial Hospital for 20 years. She retired in 1984.

Mrs. Jones was a member of the American Legion Auxiliary, and in her free time, she enjoyed gardening and fishing.

“Her family was of upmost importance to her,” her family said, “and she enjoyed time spent with them.”

Mrs. Jones was preceded in death by her son William E. Jones; and grandson, Gary E. Jones.

She is survived by her husband of 65 years, Bobby Jones of Dolores; son Robert E. Jones of Durango; one granddaughter; and one great-granddaughter.

Cremation has taken place. A service will be held at a later date.
