Downtown street rehab hits hard rocks below

By Jim Haug Herald staff writer

Northbound lanes on Main Avenue at 13th Street should reopen late in the afternoon July 18 with the anticipated repaving of the construction area on Main, according to Levi Lloyd, street superintendent for Durango.

Traffic has been diverted up 13th Street to Second Avenue since June 17 to allow work on stormwater improvements.

The project has gotten two weeks behind schedule as the result of some “hard digging.” Lloyd said.

In excavating a trench that is 8 feet deep, “we ran into a lot of big boulders. It made a slow go with the excavation,” Lloyd said.

There also were complications with the water lines. The Fourth of July holiday “threw a monkey wrench” in the work schedule, too.

The contractor will be finishing the storm sewer pipe installation, traffic detector loops, and backfill this week, he said.
