Hiker who fell 300 feet to his death identified

A hiker who fell 300 to 400 feet to his death this week on a remote mountain in the Weminuche Wilderness was identified Friday as Howard Scotland, 52, of Cheyenne, Wyo.

The identification was made by San Juan County Coroner Keri Metzler.

The fall occurred Thursday morning about 9 a.m.

Scotland lost his footing while hiking on Jagged Mountain, a steep and rocky peak with a summit of 13,825 feet northeast of Chicago Basin, said Jim Donovan, captain of San Juan Search and Rescue.

Friends had a cellphone and personal-locator beacon to notify authorities.

Rescue workers used a helicopter to remove the body.
